Fall 2016

Welcome to the new school year!

We’re off to a running start! Despite studying for exams and preparing for the ISEE, we have come across an opportunity from L.A. GROW too compelling to overlook.

This fall, SXS has partnered with the Wiltern Theater and the Los Angeles Times to host a screening of Jonathan Gold’s latest critically acclaimed documentary, City of Gold. The event concludes with a Q & A with Gold himself and a tasting party. Proceeds from the event go towards supporting Food Forward!

Food Forward rescues fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste and connects it with those in need, while inspiring others to do the same. Between various partnerships, Food Forward provides produce to over 100,000 clients within a month across Southern California.

Jonathan Gold’s Pulitzer Prize winning restaurant critiques have been celebrating and elevating Los Angeles’ diverse food scene for years. His curiosity and dedication to supporting the connection between food and community has enriched Los Angeles culture beyond compare.

Heck, we’re KCRW nerds and Gold’s repartee with Evan Klimen has been delighting us for years!

Just like Gold and Food Forward, SXS values the intersection between curiosity and community. We’re committed to supporting all the ways in which we can innovate social justice through education and effective action! Academic success is a holistic process dependent just as much on healthy food and rest as it is on critical thinking and study skills. We want all children to have access to the fundamental resources needed for success.

As a proud sponsor of the event, SXS is pledging a generous donation to this meaningful cause.

We hope you might be willing to partner with us as well in offering a donation, and in exchange, we would love to purchase your ticket to enjoy the event with us.

The event will be Sunday, October 2nd. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the screening will start at 6 p.m. with a Q & A with Jonathon Gold immediately following the screening.

Please contact Jami if you would like to participate. See below for links to learn more about Food Forward and City of Gold.

Ps.
Did you know the Los Angeles elderly population growth rate is expected to double by 2020? Later this winter, SXS plans to partner with a senior community center to set up a reading event to provide our students with a hands on volunteering experience.
